Important Information Regarding Henderson IT Systems Security

For improved security measures, we will be incorporating Microsoft Authenticator as a two-factor authentication solution into our existing IT infrastructure.

What is two-factor authentication?

Two-factor authentication provides a second layer of security to any type of login, requiring extra information or a physical device to log in in addition to your password.

By requiring two different methods of authentication, we can protect user logins from remote attacks that may exploit stolen usernames and passwords.

What is Microsoft Authenticator?

Microsoft Authenticator is a mobile application that provides secure, cloud-based multi-factor authentication. It allows users to verify their identity using push notifications, one-time passcodes, or biometric approval (such as fingerprint or facial recognition).

Why do we need two-factor authentication?

Two-factor authentication will be required to access various HSU systems including Banner, off-site email access, and other services.

Login credentials are more valuable than ever and are increasingly easy to compromise.
Over 90% of breaches today involve compromised usernames and passwords.

Two-factor authentication enhances the security of your account by using a secondary device to verify your identity. This prevents unauthorized access—even if someone knows your password.

As implementation expands, additional systems will be included to provide a more secure environment.

How will Microsoft Authenticator change my login experience?

When logging in to an application protected by Microsoft Authenticator (such as Banner or email), you will still enter your username and password.

After entering your credentials, you will be prompted to verify your login using one of the following methods:

  • Approve a push notification on your phone
  • Enter a one-time passcode generated by the app
  • Use biometric approval (if enabled on your device)

Microsoft Authenticator does not replace your username and password—it simply adds an extra layer of security to your existing login process.

What do I need to do?

To use Microsoft Authenticator, you will need a smartphone running:

  • Android 8.0 or later, or
  • iOS 16.0 or later

Download the Microsoft Authenticator app from the App Store or Google Play.

Once installed, follow the setup instructions to link your account. After setup, you will receive login approval requests directly on your device.

If you do not meet these requirements or need assistance, please contact the IT Helpdesk at helpdesk@hsu.edu.
